Volunteering Gap Year Zimbabwe

My Gap Year in Zimbabwe

Hello my name is Pablo Martinez, I am eighteen years old, and I just finished the bac at the Lycée Francais Jules Supervielle in Montevideo, Uruguay. After finish the exam, I decided to go to on Gap Year to Zimbabwe, Africa. My objective is to do volunteering and know better the culture of the country (sports, fauna and flora, and cities).

  • My first impression of the country
When I arrived to Harare airport, I met the biology professor Adam Carter, who was waiting for me to go to the village. When I arrived to Zimbabwe I see a modern airport, a good people without any "visible economic problem", that's mean that the people seem to be well, and connect to with the modern world, in the capital.
However you can see a great difference between the capital Harare and the rest of the country (the rural part). There we can see that the people live with just enough, or they live without something important like drinking water or education. However they had an incredible landscape to be happy, and think the life is not so bad.
This first day I saw a very different country with a culture, people and landscape very different bettween Uruguay, and the parts of the world that I know.

  • My travel itinerary

  • My experience in Zimbabwe
This is a different country, the people of the capital city are very cool, they aree gentle and pleasant, however they didn't knew all about the nomad children, who I will visit in the south of the country. Harare is a very big city and the city that has the most habitants. But you can see a big difference between the capital and the rural part of the country.
I went to visit a little village in the south of the country, 18 km south of the city Mulare. The village didn't had a name because is a nomad village; however they want to settle there and build a true village. I am going to help them build a library, school  and homes for the people.
At one point I was stressed because I was alone in the country. Yes, true, Adam and the other volunteers was there  with me but I think that I missed my country. However I spoke avary day with my family and my friends. so I was not so alone as I thought. One time we went with all the children to a safari because thy never went in any one.
Many times I thought to finish this work and return to my country and return with my family. Finally I told myself, that I was doing something meaningful for these people, these people, these children and this country.
I accept that when I arrived in this country, I was not sure that what it will be happened, and I was afraid. But when I built this library, heling these children to study, I think that I do a difference, and help this people to settle there and become a village, and I am sure that this new village will grow increasingly avery year.
I wanted to do something useful, and I do it, and it was very
satisfactory when we finish the work and we see all the children very happy with his new school, library and home.
